Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about typing tests and certification

What is a good typing speed?
The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. A good speed is 50–60 WPM, while professionals reach 65–75 WPM. Above 80 WPM is expert level. With daily practice on TypeWhiz, most users see significant improvement within 2–4 weeks.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM is calculated by dividing correctly typed characters by 5 (average word length), then dividing by elapsed minutes. TypeWhiz uses net WPM which deducts errors for a fair, accurate result.
How do I earn a certificate?
Complete a typing test with the required speed and accuracy: Bronze (40 WPM, 96.5%), Silver (50 WPM, 98.5%), or Gold (70 WPM, 99.5%). Your certificate can be downloaded as an HTML file to print or share.
How do the practice courses work?
Click any "Fast ways to improve your typing" card to open the course. Select a lesson, then type the practice text shown. You need 90%+ accuracy to complete a lesson and unlock the next one. Progress is saved in your browser automatically.
How do I improve my typing speed?
Focus on accuracy first — speed follows naturally. Learn touch typing, practice daily for 15–20 minutes, and use our structured courses for your level. Avoid looking at the keyboard and use all ten fingers with proper home-row positioning.
Is TypeWhiz free?
Yes! TypeWhiz is completely free. You can take unlimited tests, use all practice courses, and earn certificates at no cost. Creating a free account lets you save progress across devices.
Can I use TypeWhiz on mobile?
TypeWhiz works on tablets and mobile devices. However, for the most accurate WPM results and best practice experience, we recommend using a physical keyboard on a desktop or laptop computer.
